Cinco De Mayo Festival

This weekend, Denver hosted what I now know as one of the biggest Cinco De Mayo festivals in the country! The event took place at the Civic Center Park in the middle of downtown and took up at least four blocks. Since I had to work Saturday, I only got to watch the parade and make myself two tacos before I had to book it down the street.

Sunday afternoon, I decided to ride my bike downtown and actually enjoy the festival without having to rush. It was surprisingly easy to get there -- only took me 20 minutes or so. I did have to skirt around construction and walk around a little to find "parking" for my bike. It seemed everyone had the same idea. Even if I didn't have a car, I wouldn't have driven to the festival. Parking in Denver on a normal day is a nightmare downtown so when there is an event happening -- forget it!

I did, however, miss one attraction -- free grocery shopping on behalf of King Soopers. Man! I didn't even know about it last year. My boss had told me that you could get free groceries from them at the festival. Sadly, I arrived too late -- they must have run out of everything. Note to self for next year -- go earlier in the day. Hopefully, this time next year I will have a full-time job and not have to pinch my pennies so hard.

The festival was huge so walking around hte whole thing probably took me 20 minutes or more. They had low riders (bikes and cars), vendors selling just about everything, food trucks and stalls selling tacos, churros, lemonade, shaved ice, ice cream, soda, beer, margaritas, friend oreos, pina coladas, turkey legs, hamburgers, corn dogs and so much more. As you can imagine, everything seemed to cost 10 dollars or more.

Cultural holidays are always fun because you get the chance to try new things or just an excuse to have your favorite meal....again. For me it's tacos -- basically any type of taco except the ones with seafood. There was also dancing which was fun to watch. Sometimes, though, it's just a painful reminder that I can't dance to save my life unless you could clubbing -- which really isn't the same thing as ballroom or salsa.

Overall, it was a hot but fun day. For consumption, I had nutella churros and a pina colada! I even ran into a good friend, Oly and her daughter. Life is good! Happy Cinco de Mayo!
